In 1992 we bought Libby, a dachshund / Boston terrier mix, as a “replacement” for our old dog, Willy. We got Willy in 1974 and by ’92 he was in real bad shape. He was so sick that we had to have him put down which was a very difficult decision. Libby was a puppy and way more active then we could handle. That puppy had the energy of two or three dogs. Her disposition toward people was something unexpected. She loved everyone (except one guy). She never growled at anyone except that one guy and she just wanted to be near people. She definitely was a “people dog”.
This is Libby stretched out on the pool deck being near someone. When she was young, you could see her strong brindle coloring. Today she’s a lot darker brown.

One of the most distinctive things about Libby is those ears. When she’s excited, or begging, she puts those ears up. Here she’s showing this puppy who’s boss.

This is Libby about 4 years ago. Notice the ears – her trademark.

This is actually a begging mode picture not a pose to show me her ears.

Libby’s favorite activity: keeping the sheets from running away.

Libby’s second most popular activity – begging.

Libby now has congestive heart failure and about a year and a half ago we were told by the vet that she would die very soon. She’s still hanging in there but sometimes she’s not doing so well.

Libby died today. She had lost a great deal of weight and was very unsteady on her feet. She would fall over all the time. Her appetite was diminished and she spent most of the time lying on the bed. We would check her to see if she was still alive. The vet told us a month or so ago that her congestive heart failure was at it’s worst and it was only a matter of a short time before she died. We talked to the vet and concluded that we would have to put her down. It was with a very heavy heart that we took Libby to the vet. The vet and the assistant as well as the both of us were crying as we watched Libby quietly “fall asleep”. We took her home and buried her between our oak trees with the jasmine all around. We intend to but some stones or something around the grave and I intend to make a marker for her.

Good bye, Libby.
