These are some photos of only a few of the boxes and lidded vessels I have been turning.

Some older photos have been removed

Project 06-061

Spalted Maple Lidded Box

This box is made from the same piece of soft spalted maple as project 06-007.  The finial is cocobolo.  It is 4” high and 2 3/8” diameter.  The finish is mylands.

Project 06-052

Lidded box

For this lidded box I wanted to have the base and the finial flow into the body smoothly.  I had to spend a lot of time on the joining surfaces so that they would mate perfectly.  The body is Afzelia burl (from Laos) and the base and finial is African blackwood.  The finish is mylands.  The total height is 5 ¼ inch and the diameter is 1 5/8 inch.

This project is also found on the Woodturning Fine Art page.

Project 06-007

Spalted Maple Lidded Box

This piece is made from some rather soft spalted maple and is 3 inches high and 2 ¼ inches in diameter.  The foot and lid ring are from walnut and the finial is snake wood.  The end grain gave me no end of problems with tear out.  I finally had to saturate the end grain with sanding sealer and cut it with a very sharp tool.  Even so, there is some tear out.

Project 06-004

Walnut Lidded Box

This piece is 3 inches high and 1 7/8 inch diameter.  The finial is marble wood and the finish is carnauba wax.  This wood might not be walnut so says a few of the people in my local woodturning club.

Project 05-084

Cocobolo Lidded Box

This piece is 3 ¼ inches in diameter and 4 1/8 inches high.  The finish is orange wax.

Project 05-082

Spalted Norfolk Island Pine and Cocobolo Lid

This piece is 7 ¾ inches high (including the lid) and 4 1/8 inches in diameter.  The vessel body finish is Hut wax and the lid is carnauba wax.

Project 05-069

Honduran Rosewood box with Cocobolo Lid

This box is a simple but elegant design.  The overall height is 4 ¼ inches and the diameter is 2 ½ inches.  The finish is orange wax.

Project 05-062

Honduran Rosewood Lidded Box with Oak Insert

This box is my first attempt to put an insert into a piece.  I used two thin pieces of oak about 1/16 inch thick and I had to sand them to fit into the saw kerfs.  The overall height is 5 inches and the diameter is 2 ¾ inches.  The finish is lacquer.
