Hollow Vessels and Vases Page Two
Updated 09/27/08
This is the second page of my hollow vessels. As my turning skills started to get a little better, I was getting braver and tried some more complicated turnings. These photos are only a few of the hollow vessels I have made.
Project 0307
Vessel
This vessel is made from piece of black acacia I bought in Florida about 2005 or so. This stuff is like turning stone. It was very difficult to hollow out the inside with the tools I have and I had to sharpen the tools constantly. Sanded beautifully down to 600 grit and gray and white Scotch-brite. 5” high, 4 ½” diameter. Wax finish.

Project 0253
Vessel or Vase
This vessel is made as a Cumberland Woodturners club challenge. The challenge was to make something out of a 12” long piece of pine 2x4. This piece involved glue up and grain matching. I turned the glue surfaces on the lathe flat rather then trying to sand them flat. The vessel is 4 5/8” high and 3” in diameter. The finish is lacquer.

Project 0243
Vessel
This vessel is made from a piece of spalted tamarin. The wood looks real good however; I was not paying attention and put the side with the best looking spalting on the bottom. The vessel is 4 ½” in diameter and 1 5/8” high. The finish is lacquer and mylands wax.

Project 0242
Vessel
This vessel is made from a scrap cherry board that was rough cut and cupped. The vessel is 6 3/16” in diameter and 1 ½” high. The finish is mylands wax.

Project 0240
Vessel
This vessel was made from a butternut bowl blank. The vessel is 6 1/8” in diameter and 2 ¼” high. The finish is mylands wax.

Project 0212
Pedestal Lidded Vessel
This vessel was made from a pine knot that someone had given me. The pedestal and lid are made from a piece of scrap cherry. The vessel is 3 1/8” in diameter and 4 1/8” high. The finish is shellac.

Project 0206
Embellished Vessel
This vessel is made from green tulip poplar. I put some screws around the vessel to see what the effect would be. This vessel looked a little anemic so I sanded it and ebonized it with black ink and applied many coats of lacquer. Now the screws standout against the vessel color. The diameter is 3 3/8” and the height is 5 3/8”.

Project 06-011
Camphor Vessel
This piece was made from a small crotch from the camphor tree that we had some large branches cut from. I used the band saw to cut the wood with the major limb grain and then turned the piece as a spindle turning. I left a little natural edge on the lip and on the side. Don’t you think the figure of the wood came out pretty good?

Project 05-083
“Pine Knot” Hollow Vessel.
This piece was made from a “pine knot” or a “fire starter” from a pine tree. These are roundish things that occasionally grow on pine tree branches. We went out to a camp ground not far from where I live and there were lots of them on most of the pine trees. Someone told me they’re some kind of virus or something that attacks the pine tree. Anyway, they are completely unique and can be turned if you are careful. One thing’s for sure, if the pine branch in the knot is green, there will be a lot of pine sap which will affect the turning and the finishing process. This piece is 4 1/8 inches in diameter and 2 7/8 inches high. The finish is semi gloss lacquer.

Project 05-079
Cedar Hollow Vessel
This vessel was not supposed to have the hole in it but the piece of wood I started with had a rotten pith and the wood just fell out. The overall height is 4 5/8 inches and the diameter is 3 ½ inches. The finish is lacquer.

Project 05-063
Claro Walnut Burl Hollow Vessel
This project was “twice turned” so that the opening in the top is only ½ inch in diameter. The height is 5 ½ inches and the largest diameter is 3 ¾ inches and the flared opening is 2 ¾ inches in diameter. The finish is 20 coats of lacquer.
