Hollow Vessels and Vases

A hollow vessel is actually difficult to make.  The outside of the vessel is turned and finished and then various tools are used to hollow out the inside.  If the vessel is straight walled, the hollowing process is rather straight forward.  On the other hand, if the vessel has a shoulder, then the hollowing process is rather complicated.  Furthermore, the thickness of the wood must be uniform which adds to the difficulty in making a hollow vessel.

Burl Hollow Vessel

Occasionally our wood turning club gets some scrap and fall-off wood from Amazon Exotic Hardwoods in Casselberry Florida (www.amazonexotichardwoods.com or (407)339-9590 (866)339-9596).  Well rather than just collecting pretty woods, I started trying to turn some of it.  Some of the pieces are pretty small so the items are small which is a challenge in itself.  Here is a small hollow vessel that I turned from a piece of unknown burl that had a bark inclusion.

My First Hollow Vessel

This is my first hollow vessel which I turned from some hurricane birch.  This particular piece of wood was a little darker then birch is normally and I liked the figure of the grain.
