Made from persimmon.  4 ¾” diameter, 2 ¼” high.  Lacquer finish.

Project 0259

Platter with Inlay

This project really consumed a lot of time.  The wood, which I originally though was butternut, was so soft that it dinged really easy.  When I brought the platter to the club meeting, someone told me the wood was probably weeping willow.  The original blank was about 3” thick and I cut it in half hoping to get two platters out of it.  My plan is to finish the second platter to make book matched platters.  The platter is 9 5/16” in diameter and 1 1/8” high.  The finish is many coats of spray on lacquer.

Project 0226

Maple Bowl

This bowl finished the Space Coast Wood Turners workshop of 09/18/06.  At that workshop I turned a bowl blank of freshly cut maple to about 1” thick.  The diameter of the blank was 8 ¾” – 9” and the height was 3 ½” and it was coated with Anchor-seal.  I turned the bowl to 8 ½” diameter and 3” high and ¼” thick without going through the bottom.  The finish is sealer and orange wax.

Project 0214

Embellished Platter

This is my first attempt at adding wire to a turning.  I turned the platter from a piece of scrap cherry and made a circular cut to put some aluminum welding wire in it.  The diameter is 6 ¼” and the height is 15/16”.  The finish is gloss lacquer.

Project 0205

Pedestal Bowl

This bowl is made from a cherry burl that I bought in Florida.  I turned it so that the maximum amount of bark was visible without loosing the bowl shape.  The pedestal is made from a piece of cherry that was part of the same log.  The diameter of the bowl is 4 5/8” and the height is 3”.  The finish is gloss lacquer.

Project 06-041

Mixed Media Bowl Number One

This project was done for the American Association of Woodturners Spring 2006 Contest (www.woodturner.org).  The requirement for the contest was a bowl between 6 and 16 inches in diameter.  That made it pretty open so I decided to make something unusual.  I had wanted to make something combining wood and leather for some time and this seemed like the perfect opportunity.  Back in the ‘80s I made a lot of things out of leather and I used various lacing techniques on some of the pieces.  This piece is maple and leather lace and the lacing style is “round braid” or “Mexican basket weave”.  Click HERE to see how I made it.

This project is also found on the Woodturning Fine Art page.

Project 05-074

Cedar Bowl

This project was made from the same cedar crotch as project 05-073 below.  The piece of wood was thicker but I could not get the same diameter.  I left the knot hole on the edge of the piece because I think it adds character to the bowl.  The diameter is 7 7/8 inches and the height is 2 1/8 inches.  The finish is lacquer.

Project 05-073

Cedar Plate

This project and project 05-074 were made from wood cut from the same cedar crotch.  This piece was thinner and had both sap wood and heart wood in it and a lot of figure.  The “missing piece” from the edge is a natural edge feature that I wanted to keep.  The plate is 8 ½ inches in diameter and 1 5/8 inches high.  The finish is lacquer.

Project 05-064

Walnut with Cherry Insert Plate

This is my first attempt at turning a large project with an inlay or insert.  I made a smaller lidded vessel that you can see on page two of  boxes and lidded vessels.  I had a big chunk of walnut about 12 inches by 12 inches and I cut it at 20 degrees.  I glued a piece of 1 inch wide cherry between the two pieces of walnut.  I had some real problems with clamping pieces of wood cut at an angle (I’ll post the photos later).  Anyway, I actually started out to turn a plate or shallow bowl and actually did what I started out to do without screwing it up!  The plate is 7 ¼ inches in diameter and 1 ½ inches high.  The finish is butcher block oil.
